The Department of Journalism Studies at the University of Sheffield has a fully funded ESRC PhD scholarship available to suitably qualified applicants who are interested in researching any of the areas covered by current members of the department including poverty and media representation, journalism ethics, political communication, free speech and journalism, the architecture of news, language in the news and the history of journalism (See the departmental websites for full details of staff interests).

Assistant professor in journalism (Brussels, Belgium)

The School of journalism at Université libre de Bruxelles (ULB, Dep. of Information and Communication Sciences) is seeking applications for an assistant professor in journalism.  Candidates will be required to hold a PhD and to show thorough knowledge of journalism and the news media. Candidates whose mother tongue is not French would be expected to gain sufficient proficiency within 3 years. Candidates should also be able to teach in English. Experience in the practice or the teaching of television or radio journalism would constitute an asset.

The department of information and communication sciences at U. libre de Bruxelles (ULB) is a very dynamic and internationally oriented department in heart of Europe.

Poste académique à temps-plein en journalisme (Bruxelles, Belgique)

L’école de journalisme de l’Université libre de Bruxelles recrute un enseignant à temps plein en journalisme. Les candidats devront être porteur d’un doctorat et justifier d’une connaissance approfondie du secteur du journalisme. Si la langue maternelle du titulaire n’est pas le français, il sera attendu de lui qu’il acquière une maîtrise suffisante de cette langue dans les trois ans. Le titulaire devra être capable d’assurer une partie de ses enseignements en anglais. Une expérience professionnelle ou pédagogique dans une activité dejournalisme radiophonique ou télévisuel constituerait un atout.

The Missouri School of Journalism invites applications for a tenure-track Assistant Professor position in Journalism Studies beginning in August 2012. We seek an outstanding scholar with a commitment to excellence in teaching and a desire to contribute to the dynamic and collaborative culture at the world’s first School of Journalism.

Successful candidates will be scholars who employ qualitative research methods in their own work and who can provide clear evidence of the ability to teach qualitative methodologies effectively in the School’s graduate program (M.A. and Ph.D.) as well as to lead large lectures in the core curriculum of the undergraduate program. Successful candidates also will exhibit the potential for a productive program of scholarly research in journalism. Teaching or research interest in cross-cultural or international journalism and professional experience in journalism also are highly desirable.

As part of the research project « Communicating the Economy: The effects of news media coverage of the economy on economic perceptions and consumer confidence » (principal researchers: Professor Erik Alb, University of Southern Denmark, and Professor Claes de Vreese, Amsterdam School of Communications Research) two three-year PhD scholarships in Journalism Studies at the Centre for Journalism, Department of Political Science are available as of 1 January 2012 or as agreed.

To qualify for the positions, the applicants must hold a Master’s degree.

Senior Lecturer in Media Studies (two part-time posts)

Working for the School of Arts and Media based in Brighton, this is an exciting opportunity to join a vibrant team of media academics and researchers. You will have a good (1 or 2:1) degree in media studies or related discipline, a postgraduate qualification/PhD or equivalent research experience in the field of media studies and a PG certificate in Teaching and Learning at Higher Education (HE) or equivalent. Essentially you will need experience of curriculum development and teaching in HE in a range of the following areas: media theory; visual culture; new media and globalisation. You will also need an understanding of academic and award standards and experience in the development and design of undergraduate and postgraduate modules.  Competent IT skills and effective use of IT for teaching, learning and administration are also essential.
